Against All Odds

Joyce, John, Joan & Janie's Story

When Joyce was just twelve years old, she carried a burden no child should ever have to bear.

After their mother went to prison, Joyce and her younger siblings—John and Joan—were sent to live with an uncle. Influenced by the belief that the children had "blood on their heads" because of their mother's imprisonment, he refused to care for them and later admitted he was simply waiting for them to die.

By the time the children arrived at Building Families For Tomorrow, the twins were seven years old but looked no older than four. All three were severely malnourished, suffering from parasites, and desperately in need of hope.

At first, even regular meals made them sick because their bodies had forgotten what it felt like to be full. Slowly, through nutritious food, medical care, and the love of the BFFT family, they began to heal.

John and Joan started school for the very first time, joining children much younger than themselves. Joyce entered Class 5 far behind her classmates but found comfort knowing her younger brother and sister were finally safe, allowing her to focus on her own education.

A few years later, their youngest sister, Janie, joined them after leaving prison, where she had lived with their mother until she reached the age limit for children to remain there.

Today, all four siblings are together again.

Joyce is in her first year of college studying fashion and design. John and Joan continue to thrive in high school, and Janie is growing up surrounded by the love and stability every child deserves.

What once seemed destined to end in tragedy has become a story of restoration. Their future is no longer defined by fear, rejection, or their mother's incarceration, but by hope, opportunity, and the joy of being together again.
