A Second Chance: Irene's Story

At just fourteen years old, Irene married and soon became the mother of two daughters.

When her youngest child was only seven months old, her life changed forever. Her husband, determined to marry another woman, enlisted two men to help kill her. Stabbed multiple times, Irene fought for her life. In the struggle, one of the attackers was killed.

Knowing what had happened, Irene turned herself in to the authorities. She was sentenced to death, a sentence later reduced to life imprisonment. After spending 17 years in prison, she received a presidential pardon in 2020 and was finally given the opportunity to begin again.

While Irene was incarcerated, her daughters were raised by their grandmother. Her oldest daughter left school in sixth grade, married at a young age, and later entrusted her own child to her grandmother's care.

Upon her release, Irene entered Building Families For Tomorrow's six-month residential restoration model. Through counseling, biblical discipleship, vocational training, and mentoring, she began rebuilding both her life and her confidence. She learned tailoring, launched her own business in a nearby town, and purchased a small piece of land overlooking a river where she now grows food to help support her family.

Today, Irene cares for her granddaughter while continuing to build a stable and independent life. In an unexpected blessing, she also welcomed a young son, Moses, into her family.

Looking back, Irene describes her life as a testimony of God's grace and the power of a second chance. What once seemed like the end of her story has become a story of healing, restoration, and hope for a new generation.
